The accompanying factory letter lists this revolver as shipped on November 2, 1904, to William Read & Son in Boston, Massachusetts, in .38 caliber, with a 4 1/2 inch barrel, blue finish, and type of grips not listed, and confirms the American Express Co. inscription. This shipment included 50 guns of the same type. "Am. Exp. Co. 1158" is inscribed on the back strap. American Express Co. quickly became a leader in freight forwarding, particularly on the East Coast, and it is believed they purchased around 1,200 of these Model 1877 revolvers. The top of the barrel is marked with the two-line Colt Hartford address, with "COLT. D.A. 38" on the left side. Matching visible full serial numbers on the frame, trigger guard, and back strap; unnumbered cylinder, and assembly number "543" on the loading gate. Fitted with a pair of checkered hard rubber grips with the Rampant Colt logos.

Condition

Fine, retains 50% original blue finish, 30% original case colors, with smooth gray/brown patina on the balance, minor oxidation, period dings on the barrel, and sharp markings and edges in the metal. The grips are good, with characteristic period wear, and tight fitment. Mechanically excellent.
