This is a desirable Colt "Sheriff's" Model 1878 Revolver that was manufactured in 1882. The revolver has a factory blue finish with fire blued trigger, loading gate and hammer top. The top of the etched panel "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER" barrel is marked: "COLT"S PT. F.A. MFG. Co/HARTFORD. CT. U.S.A." in two lines. "44 CF" is stamped on the left front trigger guard bow. The serial number is located on the butt, partial serial number "485" is marked on the rear face of the cylinder between the chambers as well as a "Z". The loading gate and left side of the backstrap under the grip are numbered "14". It is fitted with checkered walnut grips that are hand numbered on the inside "8485". The accompanying factory letter confirms the revolvers configuration except the grips which are listed "Not Listed" and that it was one of ten in this configuration shipped to Hartley & Graham, N. Y., N.Y. on April 25, 1882.
Condition
Fine. The revolver retains 40% of the original blue finish mixed with smooth gray/brown patina. There are a few overall scattered minor dings and scratches. Most of the bright niter blue finish remains on the trigger and hammer. The grips are fine showing some high edge and overall light wear with some minor dings and nicks in the checkering. All markings are readable including the etched panel. Mechanically excellent.
